What is dermatology?

Dermatology is the medical specialty that focuses on the study of skin, hair, body hair and nails, as well as the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of related diseases. These diseases are extremely wide-ranging and can affect people of all ages. Dermatology is also concerned with the skin’s appearance and how to improve it (wrinkle removal, hair removal, etc.). This is known as aesthetic and cosmetic dermatology, and Elsan clinics offer high-quality care in this field.

Dermatology

When to see a dermatologist

As soon as the skin takes on an unusual appearance (presence of bumps, redness or itching, increase in the size of a mole, hair loss, etc.), it is advisable to consult a GP, who may refer you to a dermatologist if deemed necessary.

In case of a personal or family history of skin diseases, or exposure to risk factors (significant exposure to sunlight, chemicals, a damp environment, etc.), regular monitoring by a dermatologist may be useful. The dermatology units at Elsan clinics can treat a range of skin pathologies from the most benign to the most serious, including acne, eczema, psoriasis, warts, herpes, shingles, skin cysts, hyperpigmentation or melanoma.

What does a dermatologist do?

The dermatologist will ask you about the nature of the problem, medical and family history and lifestyle. He or she will examine the affected area (lesion, mole, etc.), as well as any other area where a problem may be present but not yet visible. The dermatologist may then perform a dermoscopy – a painless technique for examining the appearance of the skin in depth – or a skin biopsy to determine the exact nature of the problem.

How do dermatological treatments work?

As well as locally or orally administered drugs, the dermatologist can use a range of techniques, including:

  • Removal of lesions (warts, moles, etc.) or skin defects through peeling, liquid nitrogen, surgical excision or laser therapy
  • Treatment of psoriasis using phototherapy
  • Local injections of fillers or botulinum toxin (Botox) to reduce wrinkles.
