What is gynaecology?
Gynaecology is the medical field that studies and treats the various pathologies of the female genital tract, and female hormonal disorders. These include, among others, menstruation, menopause, contraception, breast diseases, uterus, ovaries and tubes.
When to see a gynaecologist
Patients can see a gynaecologist without referral from their GP. The first visit usually takes place during adolescence and/or if contraception is required. Patients are advised to regularly see their gynaecologist (annually) and not to hesitate to make an appointment if they detect any abnormalities such as a lump in the breast, abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, irregular periods, painful periods or excessive menstrual bleeding. During pregnancy, when experiencing fertility problems or during menopause, the gynaecologist is a woman’s first port of call.
How to choose a gynaecologist
Trust between the gynaecologist and the patient is essential. Elsan’s private clinics and hospitals offer efficient gynaecology and obstetrics services, staffed by highly attentive practitioners.
Gynaecological monitoring
Regular monitoring of gynaecological health helps safeguard a woman’s general health, and can be performed by a GP or a midwife (since 2009). The gynaecologist prescribes contraception, screens for cervical cancer through a cervicovaginal smear every three years and tests for breast cancer through a mammography, with the assistance of a radiologist. They also prescribe gynaecological tests such as ultrasound checks.
