Hygienist

The job of a hygienist

Hygiene is one of the key points relating to the quality and safety of care in a medical facility. Its purpose is to prevent the risk of infection and fight nosocomial infections.

In this context, the hygienist ensures that professionals comply with good practice, and organises and implements all aspects related to both the hygiene of the premises – e.g. reusable materials and linen (cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation) – and the quality of the environment.

Additionally, they manage the septic isolation of infected patients, monitor compliance with procedures – particularly with regard to waste disposal – and ensure that healthcare staff are protected against accidents involving exposure to blood. They therefore regularly audit the hygiene measures put in place, update procedures accordingly and develop and monitor preventative plans and actions for risk control. The hygienist also trains healthcare staff in hygiene and ensures that instructions and standards are respected.

Strongly involved in the facility’s quality and risk management strategy, the hygienist works closely with the Quality Assurance Manager, particularly during the certification period.

The hygienist, by dint of their expertise and actions, is part of the Infection Control Committee (CLIN) and may be invited to join other bodies or committees too.

What skills are required?

Undertaking this transversal role requires being extremely rigorous in the application of the protocols, instructions and procedures put in place. The hygienist has to have fully mastered the standards, rules and recommendations applicable in their field of expertise. The hygienist should also be knowledgeable about:

  • Microbiology
  • Epidemiology
  • Cleaning/disinfection/sterilisation techniques.

The hygienist displays a natural authority and possesses good interpersonal skills, since they have to interact with all medical and paramedical staff, as well as maintenance staff. A veritable teacher, the hygienist is equally at home running meetings or training courses.
