The job of a pharmacist
The pharmacist is responsible for supplying the hospital pharmacy and for dispensing medicines and surgical devices to the various departments of a healthcare facility.
In terms of procurement, the pharmacist manages stocks and their replenishment, purchases medicines and ensures drugs are stored under optimal conditions.
In terms of dispensing, the pharmacist checks prescriptions, dosages and potential drug interactions. They may be tasked with carrying out pharmaceutical preparations and managing very specific medication, such as that used in radiotherapy. The pharmacist may also be responsible for the sterilisation of surgical devices, as well as water treatment and production. In addition, they ensure traceability and quality control with regard to the tasks for which they are responsible.
The pharmacist may be required to conduct audits on the proper application of procedures relating to the medication circuit in the healthcare facility.
What skills are required?
The pharmacist has perfect knowledge of medicines and drug regulation, having first acquired a professional pharmacy service qualification, followed by a diploma in clinical pharmacy. The pharmacist is also familiar with sterilisation methods and hygiene standards. This central position demands organisation, rigour and solid analytical skills.
