Patient Care Director
The job of a Patient Care Director
In a healthcare facility, the Patient Care Director is in charge of the overall coordination of patient care. Working in tandem with the Facility Director, the Patient Care Director deploys the facility’s care policy, assesses the necessary resources and ensures the policy is correctly implemented in cooperation with the other departments concerned. They also guarantee compliance with legal and regulatory obligations regarding the care provided, and seek to constantly improve care as part of the facility’s quality promise for the benefit of patients. A full member of the facility’s management board, the Patient Care Director also participates in a number of committees (e.g., CLIN - Infection Control Committee) and contributes to preparing budgets.
The tasks of the Patient Care Director may vary depending on the size of the healthcare facility and the strategic direction adopted by management. In their managerial role, the Patient Care Director supervises and manages teams of healthcare professionals. They may also have other professionals under their responsibility, in addition to healthcare and paramedical staff.
What skills are required?
In addition to perfect knowledge of the healthcare environment and its constraints, this crucial role – with a high degree of responsibility – requires being methodological and organised. The Patient Care Director should have a natural aptitude for management, leadership and supervision, and be experienced in project management. Both patient and diplomatic, they know how to garner respect and delegate tasks, all the while remaining attentive to teams and the medical profession.
